Choosing the right appliance

When choosing a new fridge or freezer, consider the following:

• Space: measure your available space, allowing a little extra room for air to circulate.
• Capacity: choose based on your household size and how often you shop.
• Fridge to freezer split: think about whether you need more fridge space or more freezer space.

Built-in vs. freestanding

• Built-in appliances: fitted behind a cupboard door to match your kitchen units for a seamless look.
• Freestanding appliances: easy to install and move, and available in a wider range of sizes, styles and colours.

Energy efficiency

Modern fridges and freezers are much more energy-efficient than models from just a few years ago. If your fridge is over 10 years old, replacing it could make a real difference to your electricity bill.

• Energy rating: check the energy label to compare running costs between models.

Reducing food waste

When buying a new fridge freezer, it pays to look beyond the price. Manufacturers keep developing new ways to keep food fresher for longer, which means less ends up in the bin.

A model with good freshness technology can help you cut down on waste and save money on your food shop.

Freshness technology

Many modern fridges include features designed to keep food at its best:

• Humidity controlled drawers: adjustable vents in the salad drawer let you control moisture levels to keep fruit and vegetables fresh.
• Fresh zones: brands like Bosch and Siemens offer dedicated freshness drawers that keep food fresh for much longer than a standard fridge.
• Air filters: help maintain the right humidity and keep the air inside fresh.
